Cavity Wall – Construction, Purposes, Advantages, Features, Size

Posted on 2nd July 20222nd July 2022 By Malay Sautya

What is a Cavity Wall?

A cavity wall is a sort of wall which is constructed by providing two parallel walls consecutively and maintaining a continuous cavity or gap between them. These two separated walls are called leaves, the exterior part of the cavity wall is named the outer leaf and the interior part of the cavity wall is named the inner leaf. A cavity wall consists of three main parts:

  1. The outer leaf.
  2. The cavity.
  3. The inner leaf.

Why it is called a cavity wall? The meaning of cavity is the gap or empty space inside two solid things. In the case of cavity walls, we can see two walls(leaves) are constructed and empty space or cavity is left between them, therefore, it is called a cavity wall.

Now, the width of the cavity usually varies from 5 to 7.5 cm. Right now, we are going to discuss.

► Construction details of the cavity wall.
► Purposes of Providing cavity wall.
► Size and location of Cavity Wall.
► Advantages and disadvantages of cavity walls.
► Important Features of Cavity walls.
► Precautions in the Cavity wall.

Purposes of Providing cavity wall

The importance or purposes of cavity walls are as follows:

1. Damp Prevention

Dampness can easily damage buildings and create an unhealthy environment in the house, it may cause several diseases. Therefore, dampness prevention should consider before construction. Cavity walls are such walls that can prevent water from entering through the wall, and make the house dampproof.

The cavity walls prevent moisture from entering the inner leaves from the outer leaf, thereby keeping the inside of buildings dry. It is only possible because the cavities present in the leaves are well ventilated, whatever moisture penetrates through the outer leaf is subjected to evaporation by the air inside the cavity.
