The downhill end of the 30m tape is held 70cm too low. What is the horizontal length?

Solution:

Given,

l = Length of the tape = 30 m.
h = 70 cm = 0.70 m

Correction for slope = [latex]\large \frac{h^{2}}{2l}[/latex] = [latex]\large \frac{0.7^{2}}{2\times 30}[/latex] = 0.00817 m.

Hence, the horizontal length = 30 – 0.00817 = 29.99183 m

Mathematics Problem – Example:

A line of true length 500 m, when measured by a 20 m tape, is reported to be 502 m long. The correct length of tape is?

Solution:

Given,

  • True Length = 500 m
  • Measured Length = 502 m

The line is measured long (502-500) = 2 m. Hence, the tape is short by some length and the actual length is not 20 m.

Hence,

True Length of Line = [latex] \frac{{l}’}{l}\times [/latex] measured length

Or, [latex] 500 = \frac{{l}’}{20}\times 502 [/latex]

Or, [latex] \frac{500\times 20}{502} = {l}’ [/latex]

Or, [latex] {l}’ = 19.92 m [/latex]

Calculate True Bearing From Magnetic Bearing

If the magnetic declination at a place at the time of observation is known, the true bearing of a line can be calculated from its magnetic bearing and vice-versa.

Determination of True Bearing From Magnetic Bearing Rules

The following rules are applied to determine the true bearing if the magnetic declination is known:

1. If Declination is East

  • True Bearing(T.B) = [Magnetic Bearing(M.B) + Declination]

2. If Declination is West

  • True Bearing = [Magnetic Bearing – Declination] 

Calculate True Bearing From Magnetic Bearing- Example

Example: The magnetic bearing of a line OP is 89°45՛. Determine the true bearing if – a) The magnetic declination is 5°30՛ E. b) The magnetic declination is 4°15՛ W.

Solution: a) In fig. (i) True Bearing = (Magnetic Bearing + Declination) = (89°45՛ + 5°30՛) = 95°15՛.

Convert the following quadrantal bearing into whole circle bearing:

Solution:

How to draw the line for a Q.B ??

For Example: N 30°30՛ E, S 20°45՛ W & for N 25° W.

In case of N 30°30՛ E, the line will be drawn starting from the North line up to 30°30՛ towards the East line.

In case of S 20°45՛ W, the line will be drawn starting from the South line up to 20°45՛ towards the West line.

In case of N 25° W, the line will be drawn starting from the North line up to 25° towards the west line.

Now, the whole circle bearing can be written directly as below:
