The total length of the German railway is 40,682 km. The length of the electrified tracks is 55.38 percent. Deutsche Bahn is the company that looks after the railway of Germany. Deutsche Bahn is a state-owned private company.

In recent years, it’s seen that many such companies have offered their service in state-subsidized for local regions as well as for long-distance services as well. The Deutsche Bahn had about 67 percent of the regional market in 2016 and about 68.7 percent in the freight market.

The highest railway bridge in the world is the Chenab rail bridge. It is situated in the country of India. The bridge was constructed over the river named Chenab. The bridge stands at a height of 359 m or 1,178 feet above the river bed. It is 322 m or 1,056 feet high above the surface of the Chenab River. This bridge connects the two villages – Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, India.

The construction of the main arch of the Chenab rail bridge was started after the completion of its base supports in November 2017. In August 2022, the construction work was fully completed and the inauguration of the bridge took place on 13 August 2022. And in December 2022, the world’s tallest rail bridge is expected to be opened.

The bridge is made of steel and concrete and designed in the style of an arch bridge. Konkan Railway and Afcons Infrastructure & DRDO are responsible for the design of the bridge and its construction work was done by Afcons Infrastructure. The ballast takes an important role in railway track construction. Ballast holds sleepers and loads coming from sleepers are transferred thoroughly into the sub-grade. Ballast train is nothing but ordinary wagons used for carrying ballast and unloading into heaps.

The spreading of the railway ballast on a new railway track starts after the final settlement of the subgrade layer. To fulfill this purpose, ballast trains are used to carry ballast and unload it at a suitable interval near the track.

After that, the worker spread the ballast over the track by using some hand tools like – shovels, spreaders, etc. The ballast should be spread properly under the sleeper, and around the sleepers until a hard foundation is obtained.

Sometimes, this spreading operation is carried out by ballast trains instead of workers. For this objective, an engine with a break van is attached to a number of ballast-filled wagons. This setup is arranged in such a way that the wagons can discharge the ballast directly onto the track through the opening on their floors.

In the front of the break van, a plow is fixed to spread the ballast throughout the track. As the engine slowly moves the ballast-filled wagons, the plow spreads the ballast which is discharged through the wagons. After that, the packing of the ballast is carried out by the workers.

If you look into the history of the Indian railway speed revolution you will be surprised. Indian railway has no place on the speed map of the railways in the world. But that is not all about Indian Railways. Let’s take a closer look at history.

Indian first train started at a speed of around 35.60 km/h in 1853. After that, there are no such steps taken to increase the speed of the train for the next 50 years. At that time India was ruled by the British Empire.

Before 1938, the fastest average speed was not to exceed about 50 km/h. After 1938, little improvement was held and the maximum speeds of passenger trains stabilized at 105 km/h and 75 km/h for B.G and M.G respectively.

Similarly, the maximum average speed for goods trains stabilized at 75 km/h and 50 km/h for B.G and M.G respectively. There was no change happened until 1969 when first introduced Rajdhani Express.

On 1 March 1969, India first introduced semi high-speed trains by introducing the Rajdhani Express. It attains a speed of 120 km/h on B.G track, and this speed was further increased to 130 km/h in 1971.

After that, on July 10, 1988, India introduced the fastest train in the country, the Shatabdi Express between New Delhi and Jhansi. It was able to attain a speed of 140km/h on B.G.

Similarly, Pink City Express was the first superfast train on M.G which is able to attain a top speed of 100km/h.

After that India targeted to attain a speed of 160 km/h. And it is also fulfilled by introducing Gatimaan Express and Vande Bharat Express in 2015 and 2019 respectively. Vande Bharat Express is designed to run at a top speed of 200 km/h.

Top 10 Super Fast & High-Speed Trains in India

Now India continues working to improve the speed of its trains. On 8 December, the Union Railways Minister made a big announcement about India’s first high-speed bullet train under the project of Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-speed Rail Corridor. He said that it will be completed by 2026.

1. Vande Bharat Express

Vande Bharat Express is a shining exhibition of India’s Make in India initiative. It is also known as Train 18, and its design and development credit goes to Integral Coach Factory(ICF), Chennai. Vande Bharat Express has two routes, first from Delhi to Varanasi and second from Delhi to Katra.

It is designed to run at the speed of 200 Km/h, and its aerodynamic design helps it in achieving high speed. But this speed is not practically achievable because of the poor track condition which is unable to support such a high speed.

Due to this reason, Vande Bharat runs at a reduced speed of 130 Km/h. During its trial run, it achieved a record speed of 180 Km/h, which made it the fastest train in India. However, it is capable of reaching a speed of 180 km/h but does not touch.

2. Gatimaan Express

In reality, the fastest operating train in India is Gatiman Express which runs at a maximum speed of 160 km/h which is 30 Km/h more than Vande Bharat’s maximum operating speed.

Gatiman Express is the first semi-high-speed train in India that runs between Delhi and Jhansi. In June 2015, Gatiman Express was officially introduced by the Indian Railway Ministry. Gatiman Express made its first journey between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Agra Cant.

It began its journey on 5th April 2016 and reached its destination within 100 minutes. It is powered by railways WAP-5 electric locomotive and a total number of four locomotives are used to haul this train in both directions.

3. New Delhi- Bhopal(Habibganj) Shatabdi Express

We already told you that on July 10, 1988, the first Shatabdi Express was introduced between New Delhi and Jhansi. Then it was extended up to Bhopal Habibganj station, and now it is called as New Delhi- Habibganj Shatabdi Express.

Now there are the numbers of Shatabdi Expresses, but the New Delhi – Bhopal Habibganj Express is the fastest Shatabdi train from others.

Till 2016 it was also the fastest-running train in India but after the inauguration of Gatiman Express, it lost its position. And now it is the 3rd fastest train in India. The maximum speed that this train can attain is 155km/h.

4. Mumbai – New Delhi Rajdhani Express

At an average running speed of 90.46 Km/h, this Rajdhani Express runs from Delhi Central to Mumbai Central and it is listed as the fourth fastest train in India.

It covered its usual distance in 19 hours and 15 minutes, but since the route underwent electrification, the speed of the train improved significantly. Now it covers the same distance in 15 hours 50 minutes.

Mumbai New Delhi Rajdhani Express has a permissible high speed of 140 Km/h, but it is capable of running at a speed of 160 km/h but does not touch. It takes 6 stops between Mumbai and New Delhi and serves daily.

5. New Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani Express

The oldest and with the highest priority among all Rajdhani expresses is the New Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani Express. It was first introduced in 1969. It runs every day except Friday. It is equipped with the luxury of having Wi-Fi and AC coaches. It takes only 7 stops between New Delhi and Howrah.

It was the first Rajdhani Express introduced by the Indian railway ministry. The maximum permissible operating speed of this train is 135 km/h. And average running speed is 85 km/h.

6. Tejas Express

Tejas Express is one of the fastest trains in India that was launched on 24 May 2017. This is the first private train operated by IRCTC. It is a fully air-conditioned train with premium quality features.

First, it was run between Mumbai’s CST to Karmali railway station and it covered a distance of about 552 km in 510 minutes. This train is designed for a maximum speed of 200 km/h. But due to poor track condition, it is operated at a maximum speed of 130 km/h. It is capable of touching the speed of 180 km/h but does not touch.

After the first Tejas Express, on 1 March 2019, the Second Tejas Express was run between Chennai Egmore and Madurai Junction. In one word, Tejas Express is such a train that really needed for this country.

7. Sealdah – Bikaner Duronto Express

Because tools can reduce human effort as well as reduce time consumption.

In the previous article, we discussed several important tools used in construction work. In this article, we are going to discuss the tools used for railway track maintenance work. So, let’s begin.

1. Beater pickaxe

A beater pickaxe is a tool that is primarily preferred for railway track maintenance. As the train moves over the track, the ballast moves away from its original position. For this reason, a beater pickaxe is used to pack rail ballast at the bottom of the track. Thus, this tool is used to restore the ballast to its original position.

2. Jim Crow

A jim crow is another tool used for bending the rails as well as breaking the rail. It consists of a U or V-shaped armature with a sturdy screw rod in its axis.

3. Shovels

Lifting Jack is a very important tool used for lifting or moving railway tracks. It is used when a railway track is to be laid or an old track is to replace.

13. Claw Bar

A claw bar is nothing but a hand tool consisting of a long metal bar with a hook at the end. These tools are mostly used to pull up any object. but in railway, it is used to pull or remove spikes and bolts from rail tracks.

14. Wire Claw

A wire claw is a very important tool mostly used in railway track maintenance work. When there is a need to replace the sleeper, at first, the ballast around the sleeper has to be removed. Therefore, to remove the ballast from around the sleeper, wire claw is used. It is also used to spread the ballast around the sleeper.

A sledgehammer is mostly used to break the hard ground, stone, brick, etc. It consists of a heavy metal head connected with a long handle. In case of railway maintenance work, it is used to hit on chisel head for cutting rails.

Blast Furnace Slag Ballast and their Advantages & Disadvantages

Blast Furnace Slag Ballast

It is a waste product obtained from the blast furnace of the steel industry. High-grade slag fulfills all the characteristics of good ballast.

Steel slag is a dense rock with a density of not less than 3.2 g/cm3, So, steel slag is successfully used as a rail ballast.

Advantages of Blast Furnace Slag Ballast:

1. It is cheap material.

2. It has good drainage properties.

3. It is a strong material.

4. It holds the tracks in the correct alignment and gradient.

5. It can resist erosion.

Disadvantages of Blast Furnace Slag Ballast:

1. It is not available in large quantities.

2. Spreading this material on the formation is difficult.

3. Maintenance of track laid on slag ballast is difficult.

Widening of Gauge on Curves – Reasons, Rules and Example

Widening of Gauge on Curves

There are several reasons for widening the gauge length in the case of a sharp curve.

➡ Due to the loss of contact between the wheel and rail in the trailing position.

➡ Due to the tendency of the inner wheels to slip in the backward direction. At the same time, the tendency of the outer wheels to skid in a forward direction.

➡ Due to the rigidity of the wheelbase, it is sometimes found on the curve that the rails are tilted outwards so that the actual gauge is more than the theoretical value.

➡ The centrifugal force which is acting in the outward direction tries to take the vehicle outward direction.

To overcome all the above reasons, some widening is required on the gauge on the curve.

How to find out the extra width of gauge required on curve?

There are several formulas that may be used to find out the extra width of the gauge on curve.

Rule: 1

The extra width of gauge (d) = [latex] \frac{(B+L)^{2} \times 125}{R} [/latex]

Where,

d = extra-wide of gauge on curve (in ‘mm’)
B = the rigid wheel base (in ‘m’)
L = Lap of flange (in ‘m’) = [latex] 2\times \sqrt{(D+h)h} [/latex]
R = Radius of curve (in ‘m’)
D = Diameter of wheel (in ‘m’)
h = Depth of wheel flange below rail (in ‘m’)

Rule: 2

First, half the wheelbase and then multiply with lap of flange. After that, this result is to be divided by the radius of the curve plus half the gauge. And finally, multiply the result by 3000 and then the outcome will be the extra wide required in mm. All the above units will be in m.

Mathematical Example

The wheelbase is 4.724 m of a vehicle moving on a broad gauge(B.G). The diameter of the wheels is 1524 mm and the flanges project 32 mm below the top of rail. Calculate the extra wide of gauge required by using rule 1 and 2, where the radius of the curve is 165 m.

Solution: by using rule 1

We know, d = [latex] \frac{(B+L)^{2} \times 125}{R} [/latex]

Where,

B = 4.724 m.
R = 165 m.
D = 1524 mm = 1.524 m.
h = 32 mm = 0.032 m.

L = [latex] 2\times \sqrt{(1.524+0.032)0.032} [/latex] = 0.446 m.

Now, put all the values in the above equation

d = [latex] \frac{(4.724+0.446)^{2} \times 125}{165} [/latex] = 20.24 mm or, 20 mm.

Solution: by using rule 2

↣ First half the wheel base: B/2 = 4.724/2 = 2.362

↣ Then multiply with lap of flange: 2.362 × L = 2.362 × 0.446 = 1.053

↣ Then divide this result by the radius of the curve plus half the gauge: [latex] \frac{1.053}{R+ \frac{1.676}{2}} [/latex]

= [latex] \frac{1.053}{165+ \frac{1.676}{2}} [/latex]

= 0.00635

[Note: The length of the broad gauge is 1.676 m.]

↣ Then multiply the above result by 3000: 0.00635 × 3000 = 19.05 mm Or, 19 mm.
