Composition of Rail Steel

Following the composition of steel is used in the construction rails:

a) For ordinary rails:

High carbon steel having the following composition is used for manufacturing of ordinary rails

➤ Carbon (C) – 0.55 to 0.68 %.
➤ Manganese (Mn) – 0.65 to 0.90 %.
➤ Silicon (Si) – 0.05 to 0.3 %.
➤ Sulphur (S) – 0.05 % or below.
➤ Phosphorus (P) – 0.05 % or below.

b) For rails on points and crossing

Medium carbon steel having the following composition is used for manufacturing of rails on point and crossing

➤ Carbon (C) – 0.5 to 0.6 %.
➤ Manganese (Mn) – 0.95 to 1.25 %.
➤ Silicon (Si) – 0.05 to 0.20 %.
➤ Sulphur (S) – 0.06 % or below.
➤ Phosphorus (P) – 0.06 % or below.
