However, with the growth of China and the Middle Eastern countries, the crown has been taken by these countries, for the tallest building for the past two decades.

1. Burj Khalifa
The tallest building in the world is Burj Khalifa which is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates(UAE). This is also the tallest building in Dubai city. The construction of the building started in 2004 and by 2009 the structural work was completed, on January 4, 2010, the building was fully completed and opened. The building is 828 meters high and has 163 floors in it. And, 829.8 m or 2,722 ft up to the tip.
The chief architect of the Burj Khalifa is Adrian Smith. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill was the main architectural firm, and Samsung C&T was the main contractor for the project. The cost of the Burj Khalifa is about US$ 1.5 billion and is owned by the Emaar properties. As it is the tallest building in the world, it attracts a huge number of tourists every year as well. The thing that has made it even more popular all over the world is the light show of the building.

2. Merdeka 118
Merdeka 118 has now officially become the second-tallest building in the world. It has topped out very recently. The building has also become the tallest in Southeast Asia as well. Merdeka PNB 118 and Merdeka Tower are the alternate names of the building. Merdeka 118 is located in Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The construction of the building started on July 3, 2014, and is estimated to open before the end of 2022.
The building is set to be mixed-used with a shopping complex, office, hotels, residential apartments, and an observation deck. The height of the Merdeka 118 is 678.9 meters or 2,227 feet with a total of 118 floors above the ground and 5 more below the ground level. There are two observation decks in the building – one at a height of 515.3 meters and the other which is in a spire at 566 meters.
The building is designed in Neo-futurism and Malay traditional songket pattern by architect Fender Katsalidis in association with RSP KL. The structural engineer and the main contractor of the Merdeka 118 are “Leslie E. Robertson Associates, and Robert Bird Group in association with Arup” and “Samsung C&T, and UEM Group” respectively.
PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd is the developer as well as the owner of the building. According to an estimate, the cost of the building is US$ 1.5 billion. Merdeka 118 is the first building from Malaysia to receive a triple-platinum rating from the worldwide sustainability certification. Among the three certifications, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is one.

3. Shanghai Tower

American architecture firm “Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates” is responsible for the design of this massive structure. The main developer of the building was done by Ping An Life Insurance Company of China. While the main contractor of the building is the “China Construction First Building Group”.

The building’s construction started on 22 January 2010, and on 22 December 2016, the work was completed. However, on April 3, 2017, it was opened. The building is used as an office, hotel, and residential place. The tower has 123 floors above ground level and 6 more below ground level.

The work of the construction of the building began on 29 September 2009 and was opened in October 2016. It is used for multiple purposes like shopping malls, hotels, offices, and residences. The building is 530 meters high with 111 floors above the ground level and 5 below the ground level.
The owners of the tower are Chow Tai Fook Enterprise. The building was designed by the Kohn Pedersen Fox firm and developed by New World Development. The main contractor for the tower was China State Construction Engineering.

9. Tianjin CTF Finance Centre

The construction of the building began on November 20, 2009, and was completed finally in 2019. Tianjin CTF Finance Centre is owned by Tianjin New World Huan Bo Hai Real Estate Development Co. Ltd. The building is used for hotels, apartments, and offices.
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP in collaboration with Ronald Lu & Partners are the ones responsible for the design of this building. It was developed by New World Development and the main contractor of the building was China Construction 8th Engineering division.

10. China Zun

The estimated value of the building is US$ 3.35 billion. The building is used for offices, apartments, and hotels. The architects who designed this building are TFP Farrells, KPF, BIAD and the main developer of the building is CITIC Real Estate.

The former tallest building in the world Taipei 101 is now the eleventh tallest building in the world. Until 2009, it was the tallest building in the world before being overtaken by the Burj Khalifa. Located in Xinyi Road, Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan, it is 508.2 meters high with 101 floors.
The construction of the building started on 31 July 1999 and was completed on 31 December 2004. The building costs about US$ 1.985 and is owned by the Taipei Financial Centre Corporation. The tower was designed by C.Y. Lee and C.P. Wang. The main contractor of the Taipei 101 was the KTRT Joint Venture consisting of Kumagai Gumi, Taiwan Kumagai, RSEA, Ta-Yo-Wei, Samsung C&T.
