Maintenance of Road Shoulders
Shoulders provide lateral support to the pavement and provide space for a vehicle when crossing and overtaking on narrow pavements.
If shoulders are not well maintained, it may damage the pavement and vehicles when using the road.
Shoulders are properly maintained so that it remains stable, smooth with proper cross slope and in level with the edges of the pavement.
In India, usually, shoulders are made of earth. Earth shoulder needs routine observation. Proper cross-section and camber maintenance are required to get good performance of the pavement.
The shoulders are usually damaged during the rainy season and big pits are developed. That kind of pits needs to be filled quickly by using soil. Where the road is constructed on high fillings, side slopes of fillings should be protected by pitching or turfing.
